Managing AI Visibility Competitor Sets

📘 This article explains how to group competitors into competitor sets in the AI Visibility dashboard, part of Botify's Analytics Suite, available as an option with all Botify plans.

Overview

A competitor set is a named group of competitor brands. Each set has its own Share of Voice, calculated only against the brands in that set, so each team can compare your brand with the competitors in its own market. For example, a retailer can create separate sets for its beauty, pharmacy, and drugstore competitors.

  • You can create up to 10 competitor sets per project, with up to 10 competitor brands in each set.

  • The same brand can belong to more than one set.

  • A set contains main brands only. The sub-brands and aliases of each brand in the set are included automatically. Refer to Managing AI Visibility Brands.

  • Your own brand cannot be added to a competitor set.

👉 If you selected competitors in AI Visibility before competitor sets were available, those competitors became your default competitor set.

How Share of Voice is calculated in a set

In a competitor set, Share of Voice compares your brand's mentions with the mentions of the brands in that set only. Brands outside the set are not counted. For example, in a "Beauty" set, if your brand appears in 40 answers and the set's competitors appear in 60 answers, your Share of Voice for the set is 40 ÷ (40 + 60) = 40%.

Because each set uses its own competitors, the same brand can have a different Share of Voice in each set.

Creating a competitor set

  1. Go to Analytics > AI Visibility > Settings.

  2. Click the Competitor sets tab.

  3. Click + New set.

  4. Enter a name for the set.

  5. Search for the competitor brands to include, and select up to 10. Searching for a sub-brand returns its main brand.

  6. To open charts on this set by default, enable the Set as default option.

  7. Click Create set.

👀 A set must contain at least one brand. When your project has 10 sets, + New set is disabled.

Editing or deleting a competitor set

On the Competitor sets tab:

  • Edit: Click the edit icon on the set to rename it, add or remove brands, or set it as the default.

  • Delete: Click the delete icon on the set, then confirm. Deleting a set cannot be undone.

Using competitor sets in reports

Use the competitor set selector to choose the set that competitor charts compare your brand with. The selector is available in the following locations:

  • The Brands section of the AI Visibility dashboard, on the Insights and Explorer tabs

  • The "How does your presence compare?" chart in the Overview

Selecting a set updates every competitor chart on the page. Charts open on your default set. To view the top five brands mentioned across all brands instead of a set, select Top 5 brands.

When a set contains more than five brands, chart legends group the additional brands under "Others". Hover over "Others" to see the total value for all brands in this grouping. "Others" is a display grouping only and does not change the Share of Voice calculation.

If your project has no competitor sets, the selector is disabled and shows Top 5 brands. Create a set on the Competitor sets tab to enable it.

💡 The selected set is saved in the page URL, so a bookmark opens on the same set. If the set has since been deleted, the bookmark opens on the "Top 5 brands" view.
