Examining Competitors' AI Visibility Performance

📘 This article explains the Mentions section of the AI Visibility dashboard, part of Botify's Analytics Suite, available as an option with all Botify plans.

Overview

The Brands section of the AI Visibility dashboard reveals how your brand compares to competitors across AI platforms based on brand mentions, giving visibility into where you are winning and losing over time.

The Brands section is divided into two tabs:

Insights

The Brands Insights tab surfaces key KPIs and charts for your brand's and your selected competitors' visibility.

KPIs

  • Mention rate: The percentage of AI responses that mention your brand during the selected period.

  • Non-branded mention rate: The percentage of AI responses where your brand is mentioned even though the prompt did not contain your brand name.

  • Mention to citation rate: The percentage of brand mentions that are also citations (your domain appears in the cited sources).

  • Avg position: Average position of your domain in AI-cited sources, across all prompts where your domain was cited.

Charts

Explorer

The Brands Explorer tab contains a table of brands that appeared in AI responses and their visibility metrics. You can view all brands, or only those you have selected as competitors.

The Explorer tab includes the following metrics:

  • Visibility: The visibility percentage is your competitors' visibility across all analyzed prompts in the selected period. The number of answers in which the competitor’s brand appeared is shown in parentheses.

  • Change: The change shows the increase or decrease in visibility since the previous period.

  • Competitors by AI platform: The visibility percentage for individual competitor brands by AI bot in the selected period. The number of answers in which the competitor appeared is shown in parentheses.

❓ What’s the difference between Mentions and Citations?

Mentions show how often brands are named in AI answers. Citations show which domains/URLs those answers actually link to.

  • Mentions: The AI platform references the brand or domain in its response but does not provide a clickable link (e.g., “Botify helps you navigate the evolving search landscape” is a Botify mention, but www.botify.com is not linked in the response).

  • Citations: The AI platform links to a specific URL in the answer response (e.g., “You can learn more at www.botify.com” is counted in the Citations and Cited Domains views).

Customizing the Brands report

In addition to the global AI Visibility report filters, you can customize the report display in the following ways to identify which areas/keywords/categories you want to focus on:

  1. All vs. Selected: Choose to view the full list of competitors or only those you have identified as selected.

  2. Search: Search for a specific competitor to filter the report.

  3. Sort order: Click the arrow next to a column heading to toggle ascending and descending order.

Identifying selected competitors

You can track up to five competitors in the AI Visibility Overview section. Selected competitors are identified in the list with a badge next to their names.

To add or delete competitors to track:

  • To track a competitor, slide the toggle in the Selected Competitor column to the right.

  • To stop tracking a competitor, slide the toggle to the left.
