📘 This article explains how to create optimizations in SmartContent. SmartContent is part of Botify's Activation Suite, available with all Botify plans.
Overview
SmartContent utilizes a wizard interface that steps you through creating page title and description optimizations at scale. Access SmartContent from the Activation Suite menu in the main navigation bar:
or from the Welcome Page:
Before You Begin
SmartContent recommendations are based on data collected in Botify’s latest crawl. Before creating a SmartContent optimization, create a Keywords Explorer report with the following columns to compare with the results after implementing the SmartContent recommendations:
Full URL
Title or Description (what you are optimizing)
Impressions
Clicks
CTR
Avg. Position
Creating an Optimization
SmartContent optimizations are based on the most recently completed SiteCrawler crawl. Recommendations are contained in a CSV file, which you can implement on your web pages with a PageWorkers optimization or on your own.
Creating an optimization includes the following steps:
Defining the Scope
Click the Create Optimization button on the Overview page.
Provide a name and optional description to identify the optimization.
Define the scope of pages to optimize from the latest crawl. Default filters ensure you focus only on indexable pages with a low keyword position included in the latest crawl. Optionally click Add Filter or Add Filter Group to apply additional filters to refine the scope further. The ten URLs with the highest impressions will be displayed as a preview of the selected scope.
Note: If the selected scope exceeds 5K URLs, the 5K with the highest impressions will be optimized.
Click Next to customize the AI instructions.
💡 Recommended Filters
Consider adding the following filters to prioritize content to be optimized:
Page Titles
Keyword in Title = No
Smart Keyword in Title = No
Title Quality = duplicate
Title Length = Greater than or equal to 70
Descriptions
Description is Duplicated = Yes
Description is Not Set = Yes
Description Length Too Small = Yes
Customizing the Instructions
SmartContent recommendations begin with predefined instructions, or prompts, that will be submitted to the generative AI tool. In this step, you provide details to customize the prompt based on your unique business needs and goals.
For the most relevant results, provide as much detail as possible about your business, including your industry, products, unique features, audience characteristics, and benefits over your competitors. Ensure the details you provide align with your brand’s tone and style guidelines to generate SEO-friendly titles and descriptions that resonate with your audience.
Optionally identify specific keywords you do not want included in the recommendations, or extra rules to further customize the recommendations (e.g., append titles with "Black Friday").
Click Save to generate the recommendations.
Reviewing the Preview Results
SmartContent will generate a preview on a subset of URLs with the highest impressions in the latest crawl before generating results for all URLs in scope.
Review the recommendations to determine if you are satisfied with the results. If not, return to the previous step to revise the scope.
When satisfied with the preview results, click Generate for all URLs to get recommendations for all URLs in the defined scope.
Click Generate for all URLs in the confirmation dialog.
Deploying the Recommendations
You can deploy SmartContent recommendations with PageWorkers or from a CSV file. We recommend deploying with PageWorkers since it is the quickest way to implement your optimizations, and it enables you to conduct a split test and monitor executions. Click the Download file button to save SmartContent recommendations to deploy on your own.
To deploy a SmartContent optimization with PageWorkers:
Click Deploy to PageWorkers.
Optionally, enable the split test option to automatically set up a test with half of the pages in the group optimized, then click Deploy to PageWorkers. A Page Editor optimization is created using the SmartContent recommendations as the source.
After the file is fully imported into PageWorkers, the draft optimization is displayed in PageWorkers. Review the Optimized URLs and make any desired changes.
Click Deploy to production to deploy the SmartContent recommendations to your pages.
The status is updated in SmartContent with a link to the PageWorkers optimization.
👉 If you edit the instructions for optimizations deployed with PageWorkers, you must generate a new file and deploy it to PageWorkers again. This will replace all linked content in the optimization and reset active split tests.
