Botify MCP Use Case: Checking AI Crawler Access and Brand Citations

📘 This use case demonstrates checking whether AI crawlers can reach your site and whether your brand is cited in AI answers, in one question rather than two.

Best for: SEO and brand teams · Uses: AI Visibility, via your AI assistant

Overview

As more searches resolve inside AI Overviews and answer engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, knowing whether your brand is cited there matters as much as tracking traditional rankings. Citation depends on your content being reachable in the first place, so this use case checks both together.

Prerequisites

  • Botify MCP connected to your AI assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT. See Connecting to the Botify MCP for setup steps.

  • AI Visibility enabled for the project.

Description of the problem

Bot access and AI-answer citation are usually checked separately, if they are checked at all, which makes it easy to miss that a brand is uncited simply because an AI crawler is blocked.

Application

  1. Ask about both halves in one question, naming the AI crawlers and the engines you care about:

Are GPTBot and PerplexityBot able to reach our site right now, and does our brand come up if I ask [prompt] on ChatGPT and Perplexity?

    Why this prompt works:

    • Naming the specific crawlers and the specific engines is what checks access and citation for the bots you actually care about, rather than a generic "are we blocked" answer.

    • Asking about access and citation together is what catches the case described above: a brand that's uncited only because the crawler behind that engine is blocked.

  2. Review both results together, alongside your existing search visibility data.

Follow-up prompts

  • "Check the same two things for [additional engine]." — extends the check to another AI engine your brand cares about.

  • "Has [crawler]'s access changed since the last time I checked?" — useful after a robots.txt or serving-rule change.

Make it repeatable

Result

AI-crawler access and AI-visibility monitoring become part of the same workflow as the rest of your search reporting, rather than two separate, manual checks.
