Managing SmartIndex Destinations

Updated over 2 months ago

📘 This article explains how to manage SmartIndex destinations: Generate Sitemaps, Inform IndexNow, and Push to Bing. SmartIndex is part of Botify's Activation Suite, available with a Botify Pro or Enterprise plan.

Overview

SmartIndex destinations designate where you push new and updated content and the conditions for each: sitemaps, IndexNow, and Bing. Configured destinations are accessible in the Settings section.

Updating Destinations

Making changes to existing destinations requires you to:

  1. Change the destination configuration, which is saved as a draft version.

  2. Send an update request to SmartIndex to convert the draft settings to a live version (Step 4 below).

To update an existing destination:

  1. Navigate to SmartIndex > Settings > Destinations.

  2. Click the destination name to open the detail view.

  3. Make the desired changes, then click Save as draft at the bottom of the page.

  4. Click Update at the top of the page to save the changes and make them live, or click Restore live settings to undo the changed draft settings and maintain the existing live settings.

❗️ Changes made to existing destinations without an update will remain in a draft state.

Enabling and Disabling Destinations

To temporarily stop pushing pages to a destination, you can disable the destination and reenable it when you want to push to it again.

To disable or enable a configured destination:

  1. Navigate to SmartIndex > Settings > Destinations.

  2. Click the destination name to open the detail view.

  3. Slide the Enable toggle to the left to disable the destination, or to the right to enable it.

  4. Click Save as draft at the bottom of the page.

  5. Click Update at the top of the page to save the updated settings with the enabled or disabled status.

Deleting Destinations

To permanently delete a configured destination:

  1. Navigate to SmartIndex > Settings > Destinations.

  2. Click the three-dot menu next to the destination name, then select Delete.

❗️ There is no warning when you choose to delete a destination; the destination settings will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

Working with Sections

SmartIndex automatically creates groups of detail and listing pages from the page qualifiers you define in your project segmentation for each page purpose. These groups are called called sections. Sections enable you to apply rules to pages with the same purpose for each SmartIndex destination. You can enable and disable sections for each SmartIndex destination, but you cannot change sections manually. When you update page qualifiers in your project segmentation, sections are automatically updated in SmartIndex.

👉 SmartIndex section names are automatically generated from the combination of the purpose and object defined in the project segmentation.

To view section details:

  1. Navigate to SmartIndex > Settings > Sections.

  2. Click a section name to open the detail view.

This view shows the decision rules you configured for each destination and the extract rules used for each. Extract rules and decision rules are view-only on this page; however, you can edit decision rules within each destination’s configuration.

Enabling/Disabling Sections

The configured rules for each destination will apply by default to all sections; this is reflected by the section’s “enabled” status. If you do not want any pages in a section to be pushed to any configured destination, disable the section in this view.

To disable a section:

  1. Navigate to SmartIndex > Settings > Sections.

  2. Click a section name to open the detail view.

  3. Slide the Enable toggle to the left to disable it.

  4. Alternatively, disable individual destinations to stop pushing the section pages to a destination.

  5. Click Save as draft at the bottom of the section grouping.

  6. Click Update at the top of the page.
