Working with Field Filters

Updated over a year ago

πŸ“˜ This article provides information on how to use field filters to customize Botify reports.

Overview

Applying field filters to Botify reports allows you to customize your view of the data according to your goals. The initial crawl report may be overwhelming, especially on large sites, making it difficult to determine which flagged issues hinder organic traffic and revenue performance. Filtering Botify reports can help you sift through your data and enable you to identify what is most important to you.

Adding Filters

Adding a filter to a Botify report applies a field to refine the data display.

To add a filter:

  1. Click the Filters link at the top of the page if the section is not already displayed.

  2. Click the Add Filter link.

  3. Click All to display all Botify filters or Saved Filters to display filters saved for the project, your account, or Botify-recommended filters. Read more in the Working with Saved Filters section below.

  4. Use the search field at the top to locate a filter or scroll through the list. Filters are grouped into categories to help identify the specific metric, and tooltips provide descriptions when you hover over the name. The filters you recently used, if any, are displayed at the top of the list as a shortcut.

  5. Click the name of the desired metric. A new popup displays conditions according to the selected metric (e.g., boolean, string, date).

  6. Identify the conditions to define the filter, then click Apply. Alternatively, click Add filter to add another filter to be combined with this filter.

Identifying Filter Conditions

When you add filters to a Botify report, you apply conditions to the field to define the filter. The conditions specific to the field type (e.g., boolean, date) are displayed when you select the field in the filter selection.

To set filter conditions:

  1. In SiteCrawler and AlertPanel, select whether the filter will be applied to the current crawl (most recent in the selected period), the previous crawl (earliest in the selected period), or the difference between the two selected crawls. This option does not apply to other Botify capabilities.

  2. Select or identify the remaining conditions. Type in the field or use the arrow selector for text fields.

  3. Click the Apply link. Alternatively, click Add filter to add another filter to be combined with this filter.

Combining Filters

Combine filters to group multiple crawl metrics together for numerous ways to analyze your Botify data for insight into past and present SEO performance.

There are two modes for combining filters in Botify reports:

  • Simple Mode: Combine two or more filters with an AND or OR operator. Only one operator type is allowed for all combined filters in this mode.

  • Advanced Mode: Combine filters using both AND and OR operators.

Combining Filters in Simple Mode

To combine filters in simple mode:

  1. After adding the first filter, click the Add Filter link.

  2. Select the desired field and conditions, then click Apply. The default operator is AND, which will filter the data according to both conditions being met.

  3. Click the and link to change the operator to OR if you want only one of the conditions to be met.

The example above shows a combined filter that will return each indexable URL that did not receive GSC visits in the most recent crawl. If you add another filter for Number of Impressions > 0 to ensure you are focusing on URLs that are capable of being indexed and ranking in search results, the combined filters look like this:

If you want one condition met according to OR logic, you must switch to Advanced Mode.

Combining Filters in Advanced Mode

Advanced Mode uses filter groups to combine filters with an AND or OR operator. Consider the example shown above for Simple Mode and add a new filter group with an OR operator. Building on the filter above, create a new filter that looks for URLs with the following criteria:

Visits from Google = 0

Impressions > 0

Is Indexable = Yes

And either:

Have 0 internal links pointing to the page (Number of Internal Inlinks = 0)
OR

Are not located in the website’s XML Sitemap (In Sitemap = No)

This helps identify additional internal linking opportunities to boost these pages' internal linking and discoverability. Adding a few key internal links to these pages should help improve these pages’ ability to rank.

To build this filter:

  1. Click the Switch to Advanced Mode link.

  5. Select the parameters for Number of Internal Inlinks (From Distinct URLs) = 0.

Working with Saved Filters

Saved filters provide a shortcut to your frequently used filters, filters saved by others in your organization or account, and filters recommended by Botify. If the saved filter is incompatible with your current report, the name is displayed in gray text, and a tooltip appears when you hover over the name.

  • Click the Save link under the applied filters to add a filter to the saved filters list.

  • To manage the list of saved filters, including editing, cloning, and deleting, hover over the saved filter name to access the options.
