Managing Refresh Capacity in SpeedWorkers

Updated over a year ago

📘 This article provides information on how to use the Refresh Capacity KPI to monitor the health of your SpeedWorkers cache. SpeedWorkers is part of Botify's Activation Suite, available as an option with a Botify Pro or Enterprise plan.

Overview

Refresh Capacity identifies the percentage of your pages that SpeedWorkers can refresh (i.e., cache) daily based on the size of your page inventory, maximum refresh speed, and the defined cache behavior rules. This KPI reveals potential cache issues if your current settings will prevent SpeedWorkers from caching your entire inventory.

Locating the Refresh Capacity

Your project’s refresh capacity is identified on the SpeedWorkers Overview and the Cache Behaviors Settings pages.

Overview Page

The Refresh Capacity is displayed with the other KPIs at the top of the SpeedWorkers Overview page. If the capacity rate exceeds 100%, a warning symbol is next to the rate, and a warning message is at the top of the page.

Cache Behaviors Settings Page

The Refresh Capacity, including the calculation's supporting details, is displayed at the top of the Cache Behaviors Settings page.

❗️ The Refresh Capacity rate is always the current rate. Changing the reporting period will not impact this rate.

Optimizing Refresh Capacity

Refer to the Cache Behaviors Settings page for the refresh capacity supporting details: current inventory size, the maximum number of pages that can be refreshed daily (Capacity Exceeded zone only), and the maximum refresh speed.

Refresh Capacity Zones

Refresh capacity is identified according to the following zones:

  • Safe Zone: The refresh capacity is below 90%, meaning your entire page inventory should be refreshed if the inventory size, maximum refresh speed, and cache behavior settings remain the same.

  • Warning Zone: The refresh capacity is between 90-100%. In this zone, your entire page inventory should be refreshed if the inventory size, maximum refresh speed, and cache behavior settings remain the same. However, a refresh capacity in this zone is at risk of entering the “Capacity Exceeded” zone if there is an increase in the current inventory size.

  • Capacity Exceeded: The refresh capacity is more than 100% because the inventory has more pages than allowed daily. This means some of your pages will not be refreshed by SpeedWorkers unless there is a change in inventory size, maximum refresh speed, cache behavior settings, or a combination of these factors. When refresh capacity is in this zone, the number of pages SpeedWorkers cannot refresh, and the maximum number of pages that can be refreshed are identified.

Recommended Actions

When refresh capacity is exceeded, you can take one or all of the following actions:

  • Decrease the inventory size: Consider removing pages from your inventory that are never requested by bots.

  • Decrease the refresh rate: Keep pages in the cache longer between each refresh by adjusting cache behavior settings.

  • Increase the maximum refresh speed: Contact your SEO Success Manager to request an increase in your max. refresh speed.
