Exploring Index Stage Recommendations

Updated over a year ago

📘 This article explains the Botify recommendations for the Index stage of the SEO funnel on the Analytics Overview page.

Overview

The Index stage of the SEO funnel provides insights into improving your indexation with search engines. When the Index tab is active, links to relevant goal-based guidance pages are displayed at the bottom of the Analytics Overview page.

Find answers to the following questions in the Index stage:

Can you fix 4XX/5XX HTTP status code pages?

Internally linking to URLs with 4XX/5XX status codes sends confusing or mixed signals to search engines. Use the “4xx and 5xx pages crawled by Google” Explorer bookmark to view a report filtered for 4XX and 5XX status code pages that Google is actively crawling to determine if a 4XX/5XX status code is the proper response or if the URLs should be a 200 status code instead.

Can you replace or remove links to 3xx, 4xx, and 5xx pages?

Remove any low-value internal links on your site to ensure the pages you want indexed have the best probability of being crawled and indexed efficiently. Access this report using the “Links to 3xx, 4xx or 5xx pages” Explorer bookmark.

Are pages with canonical not equal tags set intentionally?

Consolidate canonicalized URLs where possible to limit unnecessary indexation of low-value pages. Use the “Canonical not equal pages” Explorer bookmark to access a report of non-self-referencing, canonicalized URLs Google is actively crawling.

Should you link to canonical not equal pages?

Determine if canonicalized URLs can be replaced with other URLs more likely to be indexed in search results. This recommendation links to a URL Explorer report on canonicalized URLs internally linked to (i.e., URLs with non-self-referencing canonical tags). The source URL is shown in the URL Card column, and the canonicalized URL to which it is linked is in the Destination URL column.

Access this report using the “Link to canonical not equal pages” Explorer bookmark.

Are your Meta No-Index pages intended?

Removing ‘NoIndex’ pages from your site can preserve your crawl budget and allow more relevant pages to be indexed in search results. This recommendation links to a URL Explorer report that displays the number of NoIndex pages recently crawled by Botify and highlights how many of these NoIndex pages are still regularly crawled by Google.

Access this report using the “Meta No-index Pages” Explorer bookmark.

What is the right content size for your different segments?

Identify areas of low-quality content to improve your rankings, especially within your project segments, since content quality will vary across page types.

Access SiteCrawler's Content Analysis reports by navigating to SiteCrawler > Visits > Analysis.
